Rabbits around a water hole 1993 - RMAG is keen to make sure Australia’s rabbits population does not explode like it did before the 1950’s (before myxomatosis) or to how they built up again in the years before the 1990’s (before the release of Calicivirus, now known as RHD Rabbit Haemorraghic Disease); none of us want to have to deal with the culling of billions of rabbits (pre-1950’s numbers). It just wouldn’t be right!
- Rabbits must be culled though – the threaten Australia’s native animals, their habitat (homes) and eat out native and agricultural plants, causing further problems like erosion and water pollution
- Australia’s best form of control is a rabbit-only virus – as we just have too large an area of Australia infested with rabbits, and too sparse a human population to be able to use mechanical methods of control
- Scientists need to find new and improved virus solutions, to ensure the most effective control of rabbits before the numbers get large again
