Schools Guide to RabbitScan - Aim for a World Environment Day Field TripWe invite your schools participation in RabbitScan during May 2009 – or when you can. Wild pest rabbits are a serious environmental threat – but offer the opportunity for teachers to provide a great learning experience for students. Downloads: - Click the button to your left, on the dropdown menu, to access "The Teachers How To Guide" to reach the download buttons.
Ideal Plan for School involvement: - Class lessons: introduce your students to pest and biodiversity issues, through class lessons and activity, during RabbitScan Month, in May 2009. All the teaching materials you might need are ready for your class, and on this site ready for download. The lessons provided are in a format that is ready and ideal for electronic whiteboards: simply download the files ready to present!
- Field trips - plan and do anytime from May through to September: to count and look for evidence of rabbits and their damage: May through to September 2009 or coincide with a special day, e.g.:
- World Environment Day on Friday 5th June 2009 or
- National Landcare Week – first week of spring (September).
Ferreting - 'best day I've ever had at school!' - All schools are invited to initiate a RabbitScan project in their local area
- In this website we have added a guide for teachers, with all the things you’ll need for in-class or in-field lessons as well as a RabbitScan risk assessment form for an excursion and preparation for field trips
- The forms, powerpoint lessons and games are all ready to go
- All resources are linked to environmental education curriculum
- The resources have been written by teachers with experience in designing and implementing science and environmental education projects
- They have also been trialled with students, who all gave the lessons a big ‘thumbs up’; one student claims the day was his best ever school day!
- Download the information and guides and start your own lessons today!
- Schools can have as many RabbitScan sites as you can manage: we need over 5000 across Australia, so scanning a couple of sites in your local area will help build a Google Map showing where rabbits are, right across the nation: your students can add their findings, directly into the national map
- Students can add their own photos, blogs and interviews with older community members who might remember the rabbiting days too.
- Email the rabbitscan team with your enquiries on
